While they
were saying this, Laska, with ears pricked up, was looking upwards at the
sky, and reproachfully at them.
"They
have chosen a time to talk," she was thinking. "It's on the
wing.... Here it is, yes, it is. They'll miss it," thought Laska.

On the day of
the races at Krasnoe Selo, Vronsky had come earlier than usual to eat
beefsteak in the common messroom of the regiment. He had no need to be strict
with himself, as he had very quickly been brought down to the required light
weight; but still he had to avoid gaining flesh, and so he eschewed
farinaceous and sweet dishes. He sat with his coat unbuttoned over a white
waistcoat, resting both elbows on the table, and while waiting for the steak
he had ordered he looked at a French novel that lay open on his plate. He was
only looking at the book to avoid conversation with the officers coming in
and out; he was thinking.

El día de las carreras de Krásnoie Seló, Vronski se había dirigido más
pronto de lo habitual a la sala común del regimiento para tomarse un filete.
No necesitaba restringir su alimentación de una manera rigurosa, ya que
pesaba los setenta y dos kilos de rigor. Pero era importante que no
engordara, por eso se abstenía de comer féculas y dulces. Con los dos codos
apoyados en la mesa y la levita desabotonada, que dejaba al descubierto el
chaleco blanco, hojeaba una novela francesa que había sobre el plato,
mientras esperaba el filete que había pedido. Fingía leer para no tener que
hablar con los oficiales que entraban y salían, y poder sumirse en sus
reflexiones.

In the little
German watering-place to which the Shtcherbatskys had betaken themselves, as
in all places indeed where people are gathered together, the usual process,
as it were, of the crystallization of society went on, assigning to each
member of that society a definite and unalterable place. Just as the particle
of water in frost, definitely and unalterably, takes the special form of the
crystal of snow, so each new person that arrived at the springs was at once
placed in his special place.

Como en todos los lugares en que se reúne gente, en el pequeño balneario
alemán al que se habían dirigido los Scherbatski se había producido esa
habitual cristalización social que asigna a cada miembro un lugar definido e
inmutable. Igual que una partícula de agua adquiere con el frío la forma
definida e inmutable de un cristal de nieve, cada persona nueva que llegaba
al balneario ocupaba en seguida el lugar que le correspondía. Gracias a su
nombre, a las habitaciones que les asignaron y las amistades que encontraron,
